About TSM Treuhand GmbH

TSM Treuhand GmbH carries out both public and private law mandates in the agricultural and food sector. TSM stands for Trust, Statistics, and Management. Its main activity is operating the dbmilch.ch database, while also providing fiduciary services, fund management, statistics, and export controls. The Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG) is its main client.

Partnership with kumai

For over a year, kumai has partnered with TSM Treuhand to support its data-driven initiatives, focusing on statistics and integrating Jira data into Power BI.

“Power BI enables us to keep the parallel development of several projects with different partners under control. The controlling data model consolidates internal expenses from Abacus, external expenses from Jira, and invoices from the accounting system. This allows us to comprehensively track costs and profitability across projects.”
Sébastien Brennion, Department Lead IT / Statistics

The Challenge

TSM uses Jira to plan and track development work with external partners. While Jira Premium offers reporting, its built-in functions were too limited to cover complex requirements, such as:

  • Monitoring workloads across multiple projects
  • Tracking the status of work packages
  • Monthly monitoring and controlling of ongoing developments

The Solution

Power BI was introduced as a complementary layer to Jira:

  • A simple connector brought Jira data into Power BI.
  • A semantic model was developed, including measures and visualizations.
  • The model supports ad-hoc self-service analysis, acting as a central hub for controlling.
  • Other systems (e.g., Abacus, accounting) were integrated to create a holistic controlling view.

The Result

TSM now relies on a Power BI data model that:

  • Updates daily with Jira and other system data.
  • Provides timely, accurate insights for status meetings, management decisions, and reporting.
  • Consolidates information across systems for true cross-platform controlling.

Together with kumai, the model is continuously refined and expanded to include new data sources—resulting in a governance and reporting solution far beyond the native capabilities of Jira.
